Easter in Alghero

We arrived early on Good Friday to get Nimrod ready for the season. It was certainly warmer than the UK at around 12 degrees C but it was also overcast and windy. We touched down at 11am local time having been up at 5 to catch our flight. The journey from the airport was easy and cheap at €1 each so by 1pm we were sitting in our favourite focacceria for lunch.

Nimrod was looking good so we started on our list of maintenance jobs with Liz managed to sort the gas by taking everything apart and reassembling it! We also emptied and refilled the water tanks as we had sanitised them with Milton solution before leaving the boat in December. However, mid way through the second emptying the water pump decided to stop working. Luckily, we had a spare pump on board so decided to fit it on Saturday morning as it was getting dark and we wanted to watch the Processione del Discendimento. This is a procession through the old town of Christ’s death bed, that appears to involve most of the town as several hundred people were involved. They had covered the lights with red veils to add to the atmosphere.

After the procession we went to our favourite restaurant in Alghero, Pesce D’Oro. Saturday began very windy with a mistral building so most of our maintenance jobs were indoors although we needed to fit the new water pump. After we had fitted it, it stopped after about 5 mins. We weren’t sure what the problem was but we needed to go shopping as everything closes for Easter. It also started raining so we went below and continued our jobs. We have a foot pump for the water so we knew we could still have water coming through. We decided to eat out to eat at King’s Restaurant on Sat evening and had a fabulous crab linguine. The crab doesn’t come dressed so it was a messy affair but well worth it.

The clocks go forward on the last Sunday in March so we lost an hour’s sleep but the weather was sunny and much warmer at around 18 degrees so it was a delight to start work on the outside of the boat. We sorted the problem with the water pump by increasing the pressure in the accumulator tank with a bicycle pump. We also cleaned the chrome and put the genoa sail back on, ran the engine and the outboard so that we are pretty much ready to go when we come back. We ate on board and had the local pasta dish – fregola – which is made from wheat. It felt very satisfying to get so many jobs done. Our flight on Monday is at midday so we won’t get much done apart from putting the boat to bed until the next time. All in all, a lovely way to spent an Easter weekend.

Flying visit

It seems incredible that it is almost three months since we left Nimrod in Marina Di Sant’Elmo.

Jo has come back to check everything is okay and oversee the engine service. We would normally do this ourselves but we get an extra year’s warranty if the first full service is carried out by a Volvo certified mechanic. They were booked in for 9am and arrived about half an hour later, which is pretty good going by Med standards. One and a half hours and €360 later, it was all finished. They provided the oil and parts which cost us €180 so you can see why we do it ourselves and buy the parts in the UK! Still, good to have the extended warranty – just in case!

Generally, the boat seems in good condition and none the worse for her first winter of the Mistrals although there appears to be a blockage in the gas regulator that won’t budge so dinner last night was a bag of crisps and a banana! Out tonight for a local pizza at the Pesce d’Oro – our favourite restaurant in Alghero. We will sort the gas when we are back here next month.

The weather is warmer than UK during the day but drops to 2/3 degrees at night so glad the heating is working fine.

2012 blog stats

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 12,000 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 20 years to get that many views.

We have left our baby for the winter!

The last two days have been spent doing the final jobs to bed Nimrod down for the winter and a spot more sightseeing. On Sunday it was bright and sunny so we cycled to the other side of the bay from Alghero and visited a Roman bridge just outside Fertilia then walked in one of the many nature reserves around here. Lovely walk but cool out of the sun. Monday, we cycled south to look back on Alghero and suss out beach bars and restaurants for next season.

Most of the jobs in winter for Nimrod are the same as if we were in the UK such as adding Milton to the water tanks, topping up the fuel to reduce the amount of condensation in the steel tanks and checking all the bilges are dry. We also took down the spray hood to reduce the windage on the boat when the next gale comes through. We kept it up whilst we were there as it allows us to have the companionway open when it rains without the weather joining us in the saloon!

It felt very strange to be leaving our home for the last 7 months. Nimrod has looked after us so well, no matter what the conditions. We shall miss her but looking forward to seeing her again at Easter and maybe earlier.

An interesting day out

It is 7 months today since we first left the UK.  Most of the time, we have been pretty lucky with the weather but it seems that this last week the weather gods have turned against us. The high winds have continued, only calming down this afternoon (Saturday) so we have not yet been lifted out and the winds return tomorrow evening for the rest of next week  so there isn’t even any point staying here any longer than planned. The lift out will now have to happen in the Spring but the jobs weren’t urgent, just needing doing at some point.

Although we had high winds, yesterday was bright and sunny, if a bit chilly, so we decided to hire a car and explore the interior of Sardinia as the only place we have been to that wasn’t coastal was Sassari and that didin’t have much to commend itself. We took the advice of the hire car manager and went northeastwards towards Tempio Pausania high up in the mountains. The roads in Sardinia are mainly narrow and windy although they call their main roads “Superstrada” but  I think they are being ironic with the  number of potholes in them! Italian cars are also not manufactured with a speedometer or indicator lights as they seem not to know what either of these are for. After about an hour of climbing and 40 km later, we came across a gorgeous lake, Lago del Coghinas.

Tempio itself is a delightful town, reminiscent of the medieval towns of Brittany with its granite houses, paved streets and small alleyways. It is clean, tidy and well cared for – something that can’t be said for many places in Sardinia.

After leaving Tempio, we then drove through a lunar valley. Well, that’s what the guide books call it but it is an amazing valley full of large boulders that look as if they have just been dropped there by a giant. So different to the rest of the country.

We then made our way to Aggius just north of Tempio and towards the coast. This was a smaller version of Tempio set into the rocks and we sat in the car and had our packed lunch looking over the valley.

We drove back towards Alghero along the northern coast to see what we had sailed past a month ago from a different perspective. We saw some lovely beaches and restaurants that were closed for winter but seemed well worth a visit in summer.

As we had the car for 24 hours, we drove south this morning towards Bosa, again climbing into the mountains and looked down onto Alghero and across to Capo Caccia where Neptune’s Cave is and where we have anchored overnight.

The downside of keeping the boat abroad

We flew back to Sardinia yesterday as we planned to take the boat out of the water to do some routine maintenance work. We needed to repair the paintwork where the shaft anode had ground into the hull in Mallorca as well as generally check below the waterline. However, the weather gods have other ideas. The temperature was quite pleasant when we arrived from the airport at 17 degrees but the sky looked grey and foreboding. The forecast wasn’t great with 40+ knots of wind due to arrive over the course of Weds and Thurs and then again on Sunday/Monday. The rain lashed down all night but the winds weren’t more than 18 knots so we had our fingers crossed that they could lift us out of the water sometime today. We walked round to the boatyard in torrential rain to speak to the guys but knew in our hearts that it was extremely unlikely. The windy (ventoso) conditions were due in soon and tomorrow (Thursday) was a definite no-go so we now have Friday pencilled in but it will depend on whether this front goes through quicker than expected and that the next one doesn’t arrive too soon as we have booked our return flight for Tuesday. If we can’t get her back in the water on Monday we will be incurring charges of €50 per day until we do so that could turn out to be very expensive, especially as we have a paid for berth already! As it happens, the wind picked up as soon as we got back to the boat, registering over 30 knots by 11am so today was definitely out.

If we had been in the UK we could have just decided not to go down to the boat and arrange for the lift out next week without any of the complications of air travel. In hindsight, maybe we shouldn’t have booked our return flight but the price goes up exponentially as you near the departure date so you are caught either way. The upside is that we can do our Xmas shopping here and learn some more Italian as we are both woefully poor at anything other than the basics although we do now know a few nautical terms!

Winterisation

We have spent the last few days getting Nimrod ready to be left for the winter. This is making us very sad as it means that this episode of our adventure is drawing to a close. We have taken the opportunity of being in a marina to wash the boat down thoroughly as we have the luxury of water, clean the chrome, put away the dinghy until Spring, take off the genoa sail (the one at the front) and wash the sheets (both the ropes to the genoa and the bedding!).

We are going back to the UK for a week and then are back in Alghero to have the boat lifted out of the water so that we can inspect her and continue the maintenance regime. The weather here has turned much cooler in the evenings but still generally warm enough during the day for t-shirts and shorts. I suspect that it won’t be the same in the UK! We have managed to have lunch outside every day and the light in the late afternoon has been just stunning.

A very productive day

Apparently, the warm weather we are currently experiencing is not common for this time of year but we are not complaining! We took the opportunity of blue skies and temperatures in the 20s to continue to tick off our maintenance list. Liz replaced the motor on the anchor windlass so that we won’t have to pull up the anchor by hand. We had enjoyed doing it as it gave us exercise and it wasn’t too bad with the right technique. However, we did recognise that in strong winds we might need some help! Liz also replaced the zips on our spray hood so that we can completely enclose the cockpit in bad weather. This is very useful when at anchor or in a marina as it gives you an extra room. Jo polished all the chrome on the boat as it had become stained and starting to show signs of corrosion having been subjected to months of sea water crossing the decks.

We still had time to stop for lunch in the sunshine to have fresh bread and homemade soup.

Bosa

Today we decided to travel to Bosa, which is about 20 miles south of Alghero to look at a boatyard as we need some minor work done over the winter and we are trying to find a yard where we can do the work ourselves. We decided to go by bus as it is a four hour sail each way and we had very light winds so we would have had to motor the whole way and the days are getting shorter and shorter. The bus took nearly an hour as it had to follow the very windy road along the coast.

Bosa itself is actually quite a nice town with various bars along the waterfront – it has the only navigable river in Sardinia. It has a castle, church with small streets and alleyways that date back many centuries.

Tomorrow we will be visiting the yards in Alghero to compare prices although they won’t let you do the work yourself so we are expecting them to be more expensive. The weather here continues to be quite warm, in the early 20s, during the day so we are still wearing t-shirts and shorts but cooler in the evenings.

Back on Nimrod

We have spent the last week in the UK sorting out various admin things and Jo needed to be back for her club committee meeting. It was a shock to the system landing at Stansted to a very chilly and damp UK!

However, before we left we had a lovely last day in a windswept Alghero with Caroline and Val. We had a lovely walk along the front after spending an hour or so sorting out the lines to the boat in preparation for our week away. Amazingly, we hadn’t left Nimrod that long since we had set off so it felt very strange.

We had been recommended a local fish restaurant, Pesce d’Oro, about ten minutes walk away from the marina and we were not disappointed. It seemed that most of the restaurant owners in the town were there so we took that as a pretty good recommendation. We all had an early start the next day so we didn’t stay up too late although the alarm still seemed to go off in the middle of the night!

We are now back on Nimrod, our home, with clear skies and a warm sun although it does feel cooler in the evening than when we were last here. We will spent the next two weeks getting the boat ready for winter and enjoying the last rays of autumn sunshine before returning to the UK for the next few months.

Pictures of our last evening in Alghero with Caroline and Val and a view of the harbour yesterday evening on our return.
