As we didn’t manage to get to Chateaulin or Port Launay by boat along the river Aulne, we decided to visit by car.
Port Launay is a very small village but you can moor up alongside, north of the lock at Guily Glaz. As it is effectually a canal at this point (Napoleon had the Brest-Nantes Canal built to evade the British blockade at Brest), there is no tide and you can moor up outside the local boulangerie!
Chauteaulin is a couple of miles upriver and a much bigger place. You can moor up on a visitors’ pontoon near the centre of town and there is even a hypermarket 5 minutes walk away. The town itself seems sweet enough and the day we were there a cycle race (Boucles de l’Aulne) was about to take place with professional and semi professional riders.
