Gibraltar is an overseas territory of 2.5 square miles on the tip of Southern Spain that, has over the years, proved to be a political nightmare. It was ceded to Britain in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht. It is fiercely patriotic but does appear to be in a time warp. The runway is right next to the marina and the road across the border to Spain closes every time a plane lands!
The most famous inhabitants are Barbary Apes that have been on the Rock for centuries and are an intrinsic part of the Rock’s tourism trade.
There is also an amazing cave, St Michael’s, on the Upper Rock that is well worth a visit with its stalactites and stalagmites.
