Lisbon

We were shocked to find that there were clouds in the sky this morning! However, by 1100 they had all but disappeared. We had a long journey of over 70 miles to do so we set off as soon as we had paid for last night’s mooring at Nazare. The wind was forecast to gust up to 30 knots at some stage but for most of the day it was less than 15 knots which wasn’t enough to sail downwind comfortably with the swell so we ended up motoring again. It gave us a chance to top up our tans and read for a while but keeping a look out for the damned fishing pots.

The wind didn’t pick up until about 1800 and then we fairly flew along with the gusts of 30 knots making an appearance. Nimmie loved it and took all of it in her stride. We just had the genoa (front sail) up and still we were making over 7 knots.

We are now in Oeiras marina just west of Lisbon. We were going to stay at Cascais but they were charging €50 a night which is outrageous by Portuguese standards. Here they are charging half that and we are nearer Lisbon. It seems that the Tall Ships Race is in Lisbon this weekend so we may go and have a look tomorrow. Tonight we have eaten a delicious meal on board of octopus cooked with chilli and coriander with a Greek salad and Spanish white wine that cost €2 for 2 litres!

Nazare

Having got in late last night into Figueira da Foz, you would have thought that we would have slept in but no, both of us awake by 0800. We found an amazing indoor market by the beach with fresh fish, fruit and veg. The beach itself is huge with walkways and even lamp posts!

We left Foz around midday as good winds were forecast for the afternoon and the swell was increasing to 2.5m by evening so we thought we would continue on to Nazare – some 30nm south. In the event, the winds were quite light for downwind sailing so we had to motor the whole way. Nazare marina is run by an eccentric English couple who are quite sweet but definitely eccentric. We are moored in the middle of the fishing harbour so lots of activity and no doubt lots of noise early in the morning!

Photos of the beach at Foz and the entrance to the harbour at Nazare with Jo in the picture as it has been noted that Liz has been hogging the limelight!

Fishings pots of Portugal

Yet again we woke up to glorious sunshine. We had decided to try and make our way to Figueira da Foz some 75nm south as there was a forecast of high winds for tomorrow. In the event, we had light winds all day so had to motor the majority of the time as we wanted to arrive in daylight.

One of the reasons for this is the fact that the Portuguese coast is littered with badly marked fishing/lobster pots. For those of you who are sailors, you will know that most coastlines have them. However, in Portugal they are more frequent, further from the coastline and very poorly marked. Add to this the Atlantic swell of 2m and it could be a recipe for disaster – getting one of these with 50m of rope wrapped around your propeller is not a good thing.

We finally arrived at Foz after sunset and just had sufficient light to moor up after checking in with the authorities who were waiting for us. There is supposed to be high winds coming through tomorrow so we may be here for another day.

Some pictures of good and bad lobster pot markers.

Oporto – the home of port

We gained an hour as Portugal is the same as the UK so we awoke refreshed before 0800 local time. The temperature has suddenly rocketed here with 35 degrees in the shade and over 40 in the cockpit. We had already decided that we would visit Oporto so we caught the metro – €7 each return for a 40 min journey. Neither of us had been to the city before so didn’t know quite what to expect although we were keen to sample the port!

The city is stunning. It has a long heritage and was clearly wealthy in its heyday with a large number of very grand buildings around a maze of streets. It is also very hilly so everything seems to be up a hill!

To start our visit we went to the Torre dos Clerigos and climbed to the top to get a wonderful view of the city and get our bearings. We then walked down to the river Douro which is filled with cafes and bars. The river was the principal transport for the export of port from the vineyards further east to the boats at Oporto.

To cross the river, you walk across the Dom Luis bridge and then you can go to the various port cellars to sample their wares. Apparently, there are now 48 brands of port but we limited ourselves to just 5! The first was Taylor’s which is the only family run business left that has never been taken over. Liz was keen to have as many tastings as possible as you could get three glasses of different port for €3. Suffice to say, she slept well on the train home!

Portugal

Another glorious day with not a cloud in the sky. We left Baiona at 0830 having had a lovely meal yesterday evening at the yacht club and then a walk around the town. The town is medieval and behind the esplanade is a maze of streets with restaurants, cafes and bars. There was even a free concert of flamenco dancing at 2300! It currently wins our favourite marina so far.

It looks like the norm will be light winds in the morning with a sea breeze building in the afternoon. We motor sailed for the first few hours which allowed Liz to make bread and let it prove in the engine room. We had some of it for lunch with the remains of the French cheese. We then had a wonderful downwind sail with just the main up for the rest of the 55nm journey. Yet again we were visited by dolphins.

We arrived in Povoa de Varzim, Portugal at 1800 local time and had a testing time getting into the berth as the marina is sheltered from the swell but not the wind! Oh well, no harm done and the marina staff were very helpful. The cost of the marina here is about half the price in Galicia so we are very happy. We plan to stay here two days as we can catch the metro into Oporto which we will do tomorrow.

Baiona

We awoke to beautiful sunshine and had a lazy morning before sailing over to Baiona (about ten miles away). It was a lovely, gentle sail downwind (wind behind us pushing us along). We have a place in the Real Nautica Yacht Club which is set in the old fort overlooking the bay. Above the yacht club is the Parador hotel and restaurant where an early evening drink had to be taken. This is our last night in Atlantic Spain so we have decided to go out in style and eat out for a change – probably in the yacht club, if they will let us in as it’s quite posh and we haven’t exactly packed our party frocks!

Tomorrow, we continue south to Portugal, probably just north of Oporto.

Last of the Rias

We are in Ria de Vigo in a bay called Ensenada de Barra. This is about 30 miles from Vilagarcia and the last of the Spanish Rias. We are anchored off a beach (apparently renowned for being a nudist one!) with turquoise water in 27 degrees on a beautiful summer’s evening. it is an idyllic spot for our next to last night in Galicia as tomorrow we will stay in Bayona to refuel. If only the weather had been like this the rest of our time in NW Spain, we might have similarly appreciated all the other Rias in a similar way. What a difference the weather makes!

Santiago de Compostela

We thought we must be back in the UK when we woke up this morning as it was lashing down with rain and the temp had plummeted. We had thought we would take the opportunity to visit Santiago de Compostela. It supposedly has the remains of St James the Apostle and has been a pilgrimage site for centuries.

Apparently, it looks better in the rain as the water flows down the streets and gushes from the gargoyles but after it hadn’t stopped raining for hours we weren’t so sure! It is a medieval town with many churches, alleyways and cobbled streets all of which are pedestrianised so we spent the day wandering round and visiting the cathedral. It is an impressive structure whatever your views on religion and the audio guide for €3 was a bargain. Bizarrely, there weren’t candles to light in honour of loved ones but you could put cash in a slot machine to light a bulb on a fake candle. My mother would have turned in her grave!

The other thing that Santiago is apparently famous for is chocolate and we decided to sample the local delicacy of pure melted chocolate with sausage shaped doughnuts called churros. Delightful but sharing one was more than enough.

Ria de Muros and Arosa

So we woke up about 8am after doing anchor watches through the night. Unnecessary but we feel better with one or two on the first night. Muros looked so nice that we decided to launch the dinghy to go and explore. Lovely village but probably looked better from a distance. We got back to Nimrod around 11am and prepared to leave. Raising the anchor by hand is becoming our daily workout. After we had left the harbour we could smell burning by the chart table and noticed one of the cables smoking. We quickly turned around and dropped the anchor again in order to turn everything off and investigate. Eventually we realised that as part of the new engine fit out we now have a 115 amp alternator versus the 60 amp one on the old engine and so the diode to split the engine charge between the batteries is sized for a 90 amp alternator. So we need to get a new one. In the meantime keeping the engine revs low should mean that we do not have the problem again.

Anyway by the time we sorted all that out it was 2pm and we needed to crack on. We had no wind for our trip to Vilagarcia in the Ria de Arosa and so motored all the way, although the temperature did reach 30 deg C for the first time while we have been away.
Ria de Arosa is a vast ria with lots of picturesque villages and islands and extensive sailing opportunities (if there is any wind!!)

We are planning to stay in Vilagarcia for a couple of days in order to do a day trip to the pilgrimage site of Santiago de Compostela.

Another milestone, another anchorage

It seems at the moment that the mornings are grey and overcast but by midday the sun has broken through and we are treated to a glorious afternoon and evening. As the electric anchor windlass is currently broken, we had to lift the anchor by hand this morning. In fact, with two of us it wasn’t that bad.

We wanted to round Cape Finisterre whilst we had good weather and little swell so we pressed on under motor as the winds were very light. It can be fairly treacherous in bad weather or with a big swell so we decided that today would be a good day to have another major headland behind us. Once around it the wind picked up and we had a lovely downwind sail with only the genoa (foresail) up and managing 6 knots.

We are now in another anchorage called Muros which is very pretty and just outside the town. Not sure if we can be bothered to launch the dinghy and explore or just sit on the boat and chill! Having said that, Liz has decided to add some rope to our anchor chain so it is longer so we are neither chilling or exploring but at least she’s happy!!
